Welcome to the Bear Den

Our Goals
In the Bear Den, there are four general achievement groups: GodCountryFamily, and Self.  This is the year your son will grow in amazing ways.

Overview
To become a Bear Cub Scout, a boy must either have completed the second grade or be nine years of age.

After your Cub Scout has earned his Bobcat badge, he may start along the trail to Bear. This is a big adventure for a boy, one the Boy Scouts of America hopes all boys will complete.

The Bear trail is a long journey and has 24 achievements, 12 of which a boy must complete to earn his Bear badge.

The trail to the Bear badge is broken down into 4 groups which are:
  1. God
  2. Country
  3. Family
  4. Self
Once a boy has completed his 12 achievements, he will receive his Bear badge. This will be presented to him at a monthly Pack Meeting.

During his time as a Bear, your scout may also work on a wide array of Belt Loops and pins, which are broken down into the categories of Academics and Sports. These are also awarded at the monthly Pack Meeting. View the BSA Academics and Sports Program.

Summary
Much of the advancement for the Bear rank is done by the scout with his family outside of the den.  The parent signs off in the scout's handbook and the Den Leader records the advancements from the handbook in our tracking Software.  The Bear program relies heavily on family involvement, but you will see this gradually change with the scout doing more with his den and more individual direction as he graduates to Webelos.

Arrow Point Trail
While on the trail to achieving the Bear Badge, your Cub Scout can also search the Arrow Point Trail. This trail is based on what are known as electives, which allow the Cub Scout along with their adult partner, known as the AKELA, to choose which ones and when they are completed. These electives are from a broad field of choices ranging from sports, history, singing, and many other areas, with over 100 different electives to choose from. For the first ten electives completed, your Cub Scout will receive a Gold Arrow Point, and for every set of ten completed thereafter, he will receive a Silver Arrow Point. These Arrow Points are awarded during the monthly Pack Meeting, but may only be worn after he has earned the rank of Bear.

Good Afternoon!  I hope this email finds you enjoying your summer!  It is August 2nd which means school registration is near, open house is coming up and soon school will begin!  We will be participating in the Swisher Fun Days parade on Saturday, August 6th!  We will need some akelas to walk with us in the parade along with the scouts.  We ask all scouts who are able to participate in the parade to be in their class A uniform.  We will be handing out candy, flyers about Pack 214, and carrying our flags.  All scouts that are in uniform will have the opportunity to carry the flag. We ask you to meet us at the staging area which starting on Swisher View Drive by the Post Office.  We will already be in our parade route spot.  Kai and Jeremy will be in their Class A uniforms.  The parade begins at 10:00 AM, so we ask for scouts to begin arriving between 9:30-9:45.  Any akelas unable to walk with us, we ask that you meet your scout at the end of the parade route.  (At this time, we don't know where that is at, but will let you know on Saturday!)  All scouts that participate in this event will receive their parade segment if they haven't already done so.  This is a great opportunity for scouts to do their civic doing of walking in a parade representing our pack as well as promoting Pack 214.

Feel free to contact Kai at 515-867-9484 Jeremy at 319-929-9017 or myself (Ann) at 319-929-9016 if you can not locate us on Saturday.

We look forward to seeing you at the Swisher Fun Days Parade!
