Our Goals
Webelos is a 20 month program for 4th and 5th grade boys to prepare to join a Boy Scout troop while learning outdoor skills and participating in 20 different activity badges. A well-run group of Webelos is a gradual change from being an 'adult-run' den to being a 'boy-run' patrol ready to fit right into an adventurous scouting troop.
Overview
The Webelos program is the part of the Cub Scout program of the Boy Scouts of America that is geared towards fourth grade (Webelos I) and fifth grade (Webelos II) students. Pronounced "WEE-buh-los", the word "Webelos" means WE'll BE LOyal Scouts.
Webelos is a program that is an average of 18 months. This is a transitional program that shifts the emphasis from home-centered activities to group-centered activities. This is done in preparation for the transition into Boy Scouts.
Webelos will provide your boy with a variety of new experiences. These experiences are aimed to help him assume responsibilities and maturity, knowledge, and skills that will aid him throughout life.
Most of the progress through Webelos will take place through activities centered around advancement. These advancements are earned through activity badges and other awards. There are 20 activities that focus on different subjects in the areas of physical skills, mental skills, community, technology, and the outdoors. The entire den will work together as a group to complete the activities. Each activity has its own array of hands-on activities and fascinating information that will enrich his life.
Arrow Point Trail
While on the trail to achieving the Webelos Badge, your Cub Scout can also search the Arrow Point Trail. This trail is based on what are known as electives, which allow the Cub Scout along with their adult partner, known as the AKELA, to choose which ones and when they are completed. These electives are from a broad field of choices ranging from sports, history, singing, and many other areas, with over 100 different electives to choose from. For the first ten electives completed, your Cub Scout will receive a Gold Arrow Point, and for every set of ten completed thereafter, he will receive a Silver Arrow Point. These Arrow Points are awarded during the monthly Pack Meeting, but may only be worn after he has earned the rank of Webelo.
Summary
The Webelos program has two major milestones - the Webelos rank badge to be earned at the 4th grade level and the Arrow of Light to be earned at the 5th grade. The final part of Webelos is bridging over into a Boy Scout troop selected individually by the scout.
